The Top Underrated Movies to Watch On Netflix

By Chenise Johnson on May 17, 2015

For many college students, the spring semester has finally come to an end. Those sleepless nights and endless hours of studying or should I say cramming are over! Some college students will be backpacking in the wilderness, studying abroad in Europe, wine tasting in Italy, or interning with a huge company in New York City. However, maybe you fall into a different category.

The summer is the perfect time for new adventures, and exotic travels but if the money is tight or if summer school is calling your name, then you may end up Netflix binging like everyone I know. Now sure, you could watch the usual television shows such as Orange Is The New Black, The Office, or Grey’s Anatomy which are all well-written, popular shows. Or you could re-watch those popular movies such as The Hunger Games, Mean Girls, or The Wolf of Wall Street.

But contrary to the popular opinion, Netflix actually has a wide variety of movies and many of these movies are a must-see! Sometimes, it’s easier just to stick with what we know and watch a movie with an actress or actor that is familiar to us or watch something that a friend hasrecommended but every now and then it feels refreshing to just watch a random movie and it’s even a better feeling when this movie turns out to be good.

 LUV (2012)

This was a great independent film that falls into the crime and drama category. It features rapper Common,  as the main character, on his first day out of prison as he spends it with his nephew. From the start, you think you know how the story will play out; a simple lesson an uncle gives his nephew on how to become a man.  But the movie becomes dark and suspenseful, leaving the audience at the edge of their seat all throughout. This movie will also definitely tug at your heart strings with the very sad moments throughout.

 Fruitvale Station (2013)

This is another crime drama but this movie focuses on the real life tragedy of Oscar Grant, a twenty-two year old black man who was murdered by the police. We are able to see Oscar at his best and worst, and of course, the final moments leading up to his untimely death. The actor who plays Oscar Grant, Michael B. Jordan, is an up and coming household name in Hollywood. He has the poise of Denzel Washington with a touch of his own silent emotion that reads through his demeanor and facial expressions. I would highly recommend this movie for anyone wanting to see a truly great yet tragic story.

The Pregnancy Project (2012)

Let’s be honest, when most hear the words “Lifetime Original Movie,” they already have a preconceived notion of how they suspect the movie will be. Most of the notions are that the movies will be overly dramatic and probably have horrendous acting. Fortunately, when it came to the movie The Pregnancy Project, these notions were false. This movie is based on a true story about a high school senior who faked her own pregnancy in hopes of exposing the mistreatment of pregnant teens. This movie is definitely relatable for anyone as it hits home with a lot of issues even aside from teen pregnancy. For instance, you see the many different perspectives from a pregnant teen to the parents of that teen, and even the friends and other parents.

 Donald Glover: Weirdo (2011)

So many of my college friends love Donald Glover. He is an amazing rap artist better known as Childish Gambino, yet he began acting in short skits on YouTube (which I highly suggest you check out) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rcx4_CszaDI

In Donald Glover: Weirdo, it is all stand-up comedy and I definitely think he gives big names like Kevin Hart and Daniel Tosh a run for their money. You will find yourself laughing hysterically at all of his unique stories and funny love confessions for things such as Spiderman, Cocoa Puffs, and babies. You can honestly tell that Donald Glover is having the time of his life up on the stage!

The Road To El Dorado (2000)

This is often a forgotten animated children’s movie (probably because it isn’t a Disney movie). However, the animations for the time are outstanding and this is a children’s movie that you can enjoy at any age. We are taken on a journey of two men that some would consider a nuisance to society as they embark on a mission find the legendary “City of Gold” which is called El Dorado. With a slight touch of some adult humor, this movie will have you laughing all the way through.

 In Your Eyes (2014)

Although this movie was recently released, it remains flying under the radar. This is a fantasy romance about two complete strangers who can connect with each other in a paranormal way. The two have their own separate lives yet they grow closer and closer through how they are able to interact with each other without ever meeting. This movie has a great sense of tenderness and an overall calmness to it. I loved that it was a not your typical romance movie.
