2015 Billboard Music Awards Fashion Recap

By Kristen Peuvion on May 22, 2015

Just this past Sunday, the 2015 Billboard Music Awards were held in Las Vegas. This awards show celebrates the current music superstars who topped the charts in the past year.

This year’s big winners included Taylor Swift, Iggy Azalea, Sam Smith and Pharrell.

But just like every other awards show, the focus wasn’t entirely on these stars’ achievements, it was also on what they wore. Wearing the right thing is so important at awards shows, but seeing the stars who didn’t quite land on the best dressed list is also fun to watch.

Awards shows are just as much about the fashion as they are about the awards, so let’s take a look at all things fashion from this year’s Billboard Music Awards!

A Surprising Celebrity Favorite on the Red Carpet

Usually at awards shows we see celebrities decked out in the latest pieces from world renowned designers like Alexander Wang, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace, just to name a few. However things are starting to change on the red carpet and this year’s Billboard Music Awards is proof of that change.

We are starting to see high end designers collaborating with big name, commercialized stores, like Lilly Pulitzer for Target and Alexander Wang for H&M. These lines help bring high end designer clothing to a more affordable price range, and stars are starting to show their approval by wearing these more affordable lines on the red carpet.

The latest collaboration is Balmain for H&M and we saw a couple of celebrities sporting it on the Billboard red carpet. Kendall Jenner wore a beautiful embellished jacket from the line and paired it with a pair of thigh high suede boots and slicked back hair for a super chic, cool-girl look.

Jordan Dunn also wore garments from this new collaboration. She was rocking a red satin mini-skirt paired with an intricate, navy top with gold accents. Based on these two celebrities’ outfits, it’s safe to say the new Balmain for H&M line will sell out in no time!

Many Stars Went Sans Underwear

One major trend on the Billboard Music Awards was super revealing dresses. High slits, tons of cut outs and lots of sheer were seen on multiple stars, so underwear was definitely out of the question for these ladies! In fact, Rita Ora, who wore a white Fausto Puglisi dress with multiple cut outs in the front and back, admitted she had to skip all undergarments completely!

Other stars who were in the same boat include Jennifer Lopez who wore a typical J. Lo dress with lots of sparkle and minimal fabric. The gown was a sheer Charbel Zoe design.

Iggy Azalea was also scantily clad in a powder blue crop top and sheer skirt. These ladies definitely were showing some skin on the Billboard red carpet this year!

Stars Strayed Away From Dresses

Normally dresses are standard on the red carpet, but the Billboard Music Awards are slightly more casual and less uptight when it comes to dress code. This year, celebrities really took that to heart and decided to opt out of wearing a dress altogether and instead we saw a lot of pants, jumpsuits and shorts.

Taylor Swift killed it on the red carpet as always in a white jumpsuit with cutouts. The look was sexy, but classic at the same time, which seems to be pretty standard for all of T Swift’s red carpet looks.

Zendaya also went sans dress and wore a matching set that included a pair of skinny pants and a crop top paired with a beautiful coat all by designer Fausto Puglisi. Likewise, Olivia Culpo wore a black Elie Saab beaded romper and looked absolutely gorgeous. The no dress thing worked SO well for these ladies!

Major Misses

Of course, just like at any awards show, there were some stars who completely missed the mark. Some honorable mentions in the worst dressed category include pop singer Dencia’s bold jumpsuit and futuristic eye mask, as well as Hailee Steinfeld’s black and white ruffled Givenchy dress and booties.

Another total miss was Britney Spears. While she is in arguably her best shape since well, forever, the cream textured dress she wore just didn’t do her justice. Hopefully these stars can learn from their mistakes and turn things around on their next red carpet appearance.

The Billboard Music Awards may technically be about the music industry’s greatest contributors, but there’s another reason we watch. Seeing what the stars wear is just as exciting as seeing who wins and based on this fashion recap, it’s clear to see that this year’s Billboard Music Awards didn’t disappoint!
