Your Cure to Boredom: Events Coming Up in Tallahassee

Let’s face it: summers in Nole Nation can be boring. Exciting events coming up in Tallahassee can be hard to come by. Your friends are probably all back home, on vacation, or are just as busy as you with summer classes and work. When you do run into some free time, you don’t know what to do with it. Often, idly watching Netflix or lazing by the pool are the answer – but they don’t have to be. While these are great, there are other things going on around town that you can do. Luck for you, Tallahassee is more full of exciting summer events than you may think. Check out some events coming up in Tallahassee this summer below!

Maple Street Biscuit Company Open House

When: Wednesday, May 27 | 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Where: The Luxe on West Call (1600 West Call Street)
What: Maple Street Biscuit Company invites you to their open house on May 27 to enjoy “warm biscuits, fresh free coffee, and southern comfort food with a modern twist”! Maple Street Biscuit Co. had their start in Jacksonville about 2 ½ years ago in order to not just make a profit but to also “make a difference and be a part of the community.” Maple Street Biscuit Company will be located where the Atomic Coffee on Call Street used to be.

Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Nile

When: Thursday, May 28 – Sunday, June 14
Where: Theatre Tallahassee (1861 Thomasville Road)
What: Come out to Theatre Tallahassee’s fabulous mainstage to view Agatha Christie’s own play adaptation of her novel Murder on the Nile, in which a murder occurs on a boat cruising on the Nile River. Directed by Melissa Findley, you can check out this play on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. or on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. any day from May 28 – June 14. Purchase tickets here for $12-$22.

JDRF One Walk

When: Saturday, May 30 | 8:00 a.m.
Where: Southwood Town Center (3196 Merchants Row Boulevard)
What: This is one of the more serious events coming up in Tallahassee. According to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s website, “JDRF One Walk has one goal: creating a world without Type One Diabetes.” Type One Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that typically emerges in children whose immune system attacks the pancreas, making it unable to produce insulin. Joslin Diabetes Center estimates that every 1 in 400 to 500 children is affected by this disease. Approximately Come out to the 3-mile One Walk to raise awareness and funds for this very important cause. Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:00 a.m.

ROXY ROCA Soul Night

When: Sunday, May 31 | 8:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.
Where: The Side Bar Theatre (809 Railroad Avenue)
What: This is just one of several exciting musical events coming up in Tallahassee! Come out to The Side Bar Theatre and enjoy live music from ROXY ROCA, a seven-piece band that visittallahassee.com describes as “a seven-piece horn-driven southern soul band…inspired by 60s artists.” ROXY ROCA is set to hit the stage at 10:15 p.m., but doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the opening band goes on at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $7 before the event at $10 at the door. Keep in mind that this is an 18+ event.

Tallahassee Latin Dance Festival 2015

When: Friday, June 5 at 6:00 p.m. – Monday, June 8 at 4:00 a.m.
Where: Tallahassee Antique Car Museum (6800 Mahan Drive)
What: The third annual Tallahassee Latin Dance Festival is expected to be such a big event that it has to be hosted at the substantially large Tallahassee Antique Car Museum. The event will feature dance workshops at different levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) and different styles of dancing (bachata, casino, cha cha cha, kizomba, mambo, tango, and salsa). Renowned dancers, instructors, and DJs will be attending the event, including Joelle Joseph, Davidson St. Fort, and DJ Jose Suavebeats. Check out the festival’s website for more information on the schedule and to purchase tickets, which range from $10 – $125 depending on which events you would like to attend.

V89 Summer Showcase

When: Friday, June 5 | 9:30 p.m. • Saturday, June 6 | 9:00 p.m.
Where: Pug’s Live (926 West Tharpe Street)
What: WVFS 89.7 FM and Cow Haus present an exciting event coming up in Tallahassee: the V89 Summer Showcase. The bands featured in this showcase mainly play alternative rock music. Saturday night’s event will feature Gainesville’s Dikembe and Tallahassee’s own Buffalo BuffaloEcho Base, and Naps. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the show starts at 9:00 p.m. Added more recently, the Friday night event will feature Tallahassee locals Hold That HandPat Puckett, and Ossifer. Doors open at 9:00 p.m. and the show starts at 9:30 p.m. The best part about this showcase is that there is NO cover!

Rock the Sunblock

When: Saturday, June 13 | 7:30 p.m.
Where: American Legion Hall (229 Lake Ella Drive)
What: Another one of many meaningful events coming up in Tallahassee is Rock the Sunblock is a concert event at Lake Ella benefitting the Victor Over Cancer Foundation. This foundation’s mission is to “educate our state ton the importance of sunblock and routine body scans.” Hosted by Off Meridian, the event will feature rock music from Tallahassee artists. According to the Facebook event, a $10 minimum donation is suggested for each adult in attendance.

Tomato “Feastival” 2015

When: Sunday, June 14 | 4:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Where: Turkey Hill Farm Tallahassee (3546 Baum Road)
What: The celebration of the great tomato is back! This family occasion will include music, a cake walk, a tomato tasting contest, a delicious covered dish dinner, and more. The event is a fundraiser for the Red Hills Small Farm Alliance. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 12-16, and free for children under the age of 12. Check out the Facebook event for information on where you can purchase your tickets. Keep in mind that pets are not invited to this event.
