What We Didn't Fail to Notice: Adele's Comeback
Adele’s new single that released today, “Hello,” has been playing on millions of people’s playlists and the video has been viewed over 621,000 times with over 11 million reviews. There are aspects of the video that will be elaborated on in this brief review that is meant to draw a spotlight on the things in the video that we, as the audience, did not fail to notice.
First: There’s this sepia-like filter on the whole video. Nothing really is in color but nothing is in black and white, either. For the audience, the taking away of the color can take the focus from the would-be vivid landscape of the video and places it on what is being said in the opening lines of the video.
Then, and what has already gotten critical feedback on various social media outlets, is this flip phone that Adele is using to have this phone conversation on. I, personally, was under the impression that the scene was supposed to be taking place in the past so I didn’t think too much about it. I guess there were a lot of people upset because they didn’t know what a flip phone looks like but that could just be my reasoning for maybe why such a petty thing could be brought up in conversation. What is also worthy of note here are these nails that Adele must have had done to match this past-time themed video. #Werk
When Adele enters the old, dusty house and starts taking off the covers of the furniture it is safe to assume a metaphor here that Adele is going to be uncovering some things from her past, like the furniture, and addressing them for the first time in (four) years.
Adele, then, shows us another aspect that had us all gasping: This contouring!! It wouldn’t be complete, of course, without the matching #Eyebrows.
Wait, hold up, wait a minute. Is that a person of color that is going to be a main character in this video?? Yes ma’am, Adele, YOU BETTER DO IT!
Oh shoot, another old phone. Yes, young people of today, those phones that only a few of you have at home (known as ‘landlines’) used to have cords attached to them (*gasp*).
Adele, you are SANGIN’, baby. Woah. These last four years have been GOOD to you, Honey.
Oh no. The Feels are coming. #Crying #ThatSecondVerseThough
I hope all of my past boyfriends are listening to this.
How did they do this wind-blowing-the-hair-perfectly thing? Did they borrow a few fans from Beyonce?
All I can say, Adele, you better work!!
