A main New Year’s resolution that most people have is to lose weight, get in shape, have better eating habits, or something along those lines.

It’s still early in the year, so if you fell off the wagon already, it’s time to get back up! The thing about workouts is that they can get old if you do the same thing all the time, so mix it up.

Here are some great ways to get out there and get active in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

1) Get outdoorsy.

Like I mentioned, staying in a routine is wonderful and all, but you want to make sure you don’t get bored. It would be nice to vary your time by doing some gym workouts, some workout classes, and then some fun outdoorsy hikes, bike rides, or trail runs. Even if you’ve never been hiking before, it is definitely something that anyone can get into. You’ll be huffing and puffing on the way up, but just think of that view at the top!

Al Sabo Land Preserve is a 25-mile loop trail (totally don’t have to do the whole thing!) that is a moderate level and great for hiking and mountain biking. It is dog friendly, has caves to explore, and could be a fun excursion to take with your friends.

Yankee Springs Recreation Area is another one you might want to test out. This one is shorter than the first, looping at 13.1 miles, and is good for all skill levels. Take your time and don’t be worried if you can’t make it through the whole loop; if you keep at it, 13.1 miles will be a piece of cake.

2) Enjoy winter wonderland adventures.

While it’s still cold out, why not take advantage of some of the wintry sports to get your daily workout in? You can hit the slopes and feel the burn as you snowboard or ski, go ice-skating to work on your stamina, or go sledding to work on your core.

Working muscles in a different way than you usually do at the gym will leave you feeling sore the next day, but satisfied. There are tons of ski resorts in the area, like Timber Ridge Ski Resort or Swiss Valley (and you all really need to take advantage of those $24 lift tickets, because in California it’s like $100 for half a day … crazy, right?).

Snow sports are fun to take advantage of because you don’t get them all the time so they are special, a great workout, and a way to have a blast with your friends and family.

3) Surround yourself with motivation.

It’s easy to convince yourself to skip a workout if you are not in an environment that promotes motivation, or around people who are on the fit train, so now is your time to change that.

Living close to a gym would definitely up your chances of squeezing a workout in, and since you’ll see many people making the trek to the gym, you’ll be less likely to skip out.

A place that you should really check out if you are looking to live off campus, in a place that will help with your motivation, is Campus Court at Knollwood. Coming off of a successful season sponsoring the Western Michigan Bronco’s hockey team and playing host to the Lawson Lunatics, Campus Court at Knollwood recently upped its own game.

The property announced renovations which will include a renovation to the gym and pool deck. The gym, which was formally a basketball court, will now consist of an elevated cardio area called the Cardio Loft, as well as a Crossfit-esque training facility on the ground floor.

Campus Court at Knollwood additionally offers yoga classes and boot camps. They plan to expand the pool area by adding a large deck and cabana spaces.

A brand new gym, awesome workout classes, and a nice place to live? You’ll be getting those rock hard abs in no time.

4) Dance it up.

No matter your age, you can never be too old to dance, and I mean really dance. Nowadays, most people don’t even know routine dances like Thriller or how to waltz; all they know are those weird trending arm and leg movements (see stanky leg and the nae-nae).

But what if you brought real dancing back? To get a good workout and to look smooth at the next wedding or party that you attend, why not take some dance classes? Kalamazoo Salsa is a great place to get you started. There is great music, awesome faculty, and a variety of styles of dance to try out.

These are just a few of the ways that you can get out there and stay active. Good luck!
