Apartment Location: Important Or Not Really?

By Kylie Exline on August 8, 2016

Deciding our apartment’s location is pivotal for various reasons. For one, we want to be as close to as many of our necessities as possible. And for two, we want to know that we are safe. Both very reasonable.

The apartment’s location is vital because once we sign that lease, we are left to deal with what that entails — AKA an entire 12 months of hating where we sleep at night.

Of course the ideal spot would be close to entertainment, food, and your friends, but we unfortunately cannot always win. To discover why your home’s location holds value, continue to read below.

Campus/Library

The number one factor in deciding where we will be moving should definitely be its relation to campus. Even if this apartment complex offers all of the best amenities in the world, what is the point if we are not even going to be attending class? That is right, be a good student.

There is a better chance of us actually being present to our 11 a.m. (8 a.m.’s are solely for freshman), if we are five minutes away as opposed to 15. We all know we need our sleep. Plus, there is coffee on the way. Look at that.

Being neighbor to campus also comes in handy when we want to be there for any possible reason whatsoever. They have gyms, food, libraries, and let us not forget about our stadiums for any sport (football season is almost upon us).

And the best part about being a stone’s throw away from your school is that once you have finished your all-nighter at the library (good for you), your wonderful bed is literally two minutes away. Sounds like a winner to me.

Park/Gym

Your apartment’s location should be close to some sort of outside field or trail for obvious reasons. Sometimes, all we really need in life is some fresh air and somewhere to be alone. We have all been there.

Having a gym nearby is always a positive because it limits your excuses as to why you cannot work out. Even if you make time for some exercise about three days a week, you are doing something. And we all know we need to work off those alcoholic calories at some point. Sorry, I had to say it.

It is nice to have a park relatively close for tailgates, parties, and just an area to hang out with your friends. We always need more of those. Plus, you will have oh so much room for outdoor activities, including Frisbee, football, and of course shotgunning. Obviously all sports-related.

Restaurants/Food

This is probably the most vital piece of information included in this article because for one, we need this in order to actually survive life. Food is imperative and should always be a deciding factor on where we choose to live.

Being near to restaurants or diners is huge because we do not always feel like cooking. Cue being college kids. So it helps when we have a variety of options outside our front door. And having a grocery store close to us is just as important because we consistently need to buy necessities, such as milk and alcohol. They clearly go hand-in-hand.

It is nice knowing that after a long day at work or classes or both, we can come home to our favorite in-town diner being right there. How nice.

Hospital/Police Department

Although you may not pay much attention to where your closest hospital or clinic is, it is important to know these things for a few reasons. I mean, you never know when you may need a few stitches. Shoutout to the night before.

Regardless of where you decide to move, there will be rarities of accidents/crimes occurring. When there is a police headquarters down the street, it makes me feel safer knowing that it would never take them unrealistically long to come and save the day, hopefully.

Downfall is, make sure your house parties are not super obnoxious because they will be quick to shut that down. But hey, safety is greater than no safety, amIright?

Clubs/Bars

Of course entertainment should always be close to us because we never know when it is needed. Though it is most of the time given we all need some distraction in our lives.

Having a movie theatre, golf course, or bar is always a good thing. With our apartment being so close, a night out on the town will not cost us a million dollars in Uber, and if anything decides to go not as planned, our escape is simply a few minutes away.

Even if we end up crashing at a friend’s house, good news is that they should not be too far and we can still make it to our shift on time. How else can we afford these nights out without a job, guys?

When deciding where our apartment should be, there are a million and one things that we look for. The most important two should be its proximity to our campus, and safety above all else.

It is always great when we have entertainment and food options, plus nearby gyms or parks. Regardless, selecting our home’s location is important and we should have fun with it along the way.
