You'll Always Be My Best Friend, But...

By Felicia Reich on November 21, 2016

Dear Best Friend,

You’ll always be my best friend, but I’ve changed. Although it’s only been three months since I said goodbye to you, I know I’ve changed in ways you can’t pick up on over the phone. My world view has broadened. My opinions have shifted. My interests have evolved. I don’t regret these changes I’ve experienced. In fact, I’m excited to see how much more I change in these next four years. But I know I’ll seem different to you. We may not notice it at first. We may see each other for the first time over this Thanksgiving break and think we still know each other better than we know ourselves. Because that’s how we’ve always been. We can communicate with just a look. You know what’s bothering me before I know it myself. Quite plainly, you’re my person. But how can I expect you to know who I am when I’m just now starting to figure it out?

I want to know every detail of your life in college. Does the girl behind you in class tap her foot too loudly? Do you still take your coffee black? There are so many daily trivialities that have found their way into the subtle changes of my life. Will you notice them? Will I notice them in you?

But there’s more in my life influencing me than the day-to-day minutiae. There are my friends. I love my friends. Not only do they encourage me to better myself, they love and accept my flaws. They make me feel supported and safe and loved.  I’m so grateful to have them by my side as I discover more and more about who I am and who I can be. So yes, I may reference some of our stupid jokes when I’m with you. And you may not find it funny. But my connection with them, as much as I cherish it, bears no influence on our friendship.

All I hope for you, best friend, is that you find people in college that love you as much as I do; that see your potential and push you towards it; that know when you need alone time; that know how special you are.

I’ve found those people here. But they wouldn’t mean the same to me if I didn’t already know that same unconditional love from you.

Thank you for teaching me how to love and how to be loved.

Always and Forever,

Your Not-So-Different Best Friend
