GoFundM(y) College Tuition

By Amanda Cohen on February 19, 2017

Even though GoFundMe started only a short six years ago, it has quickly taken off and has become the go-to method for paying college tuition (okay, not go-to, but it definitely has become extremely popular). More and more students are turning to GoFundMe in order to pay for their college tuition.

According to a recent press release, GoFundMe has released a guidebook showing the growing trend of college students turning to GoFundMe to pay for tuition and other costs associated with college. The Guidebook includes three sections:

1. National Data

2. Step-by-Step Instructions

3. Tips to Launch a Successful GoFundMe, and State-Specific Data

View the guidebook HERE. GoFundMe also released a new college fundraising hub to serve as a resource for students and their communities, with the intent of making it as easy as possible for GoFundMe donors to find students and give students and families the tools they need for success.

GoFundMe is an organization/website that allows people to post a fundraising goal along with the story behind their particular fundraiser. GoFundMe is public, so anyone can get involved and help their fellow people. People can post comments, send messages, add pictures, and donate money. The administrators of the individual page can adjust the fundraising goal, post updates, and send messages. Both the admins and the people who visit the page can share the page itself to any other social media platform (like Facebook or Twitter).

Yet, statistics show that in the past year, GoFundMe pages for high school and college tuition have increased, amounting to over 200,000 different pages. The story behind the pages differs, however. You see stories talking about how a person can no longer take out student loans, details of a family member passing away, or a daughter whose dad does not approve of her boyfriend being cut off entirely.

130,000 GoFundMe pages have raised over $60 million through upwards of 850,000 donations. Note: these numbers are solely for education tuition-based pages … the amount of money raised overall has amounted to billions of dollars.

It is amazing and fascinating to see our world, which is extremely divided in the moment, come together to help family members, friends, or even complete strangers. This increasing trend shows how valued education is in the world and shows people’s desires to learn and to continue their education.

Oftentimes, you can find heartfelt messages attached to the donations; some are even a paragraph long. GoFundMe has become a platform of connection for people and has helped to educate those who cannot afford the expenses of high school and college.
