I find it incredibly discouraging that seemingly every negative review of professor magnan has been remove . In short he has no place in a classroom anymore. By the drop date our class only had one grade to judge our performance on leaving most students baffled as to whether they should drop the class or not. The biggest problem with Dr Magnan is simple and downright unacceptable; his grading provides absolute minimal partial credit (ie max partial credit for a 20 point problem may be 5 points), bearing in mind that the longest test he has given yet was 4 questions and they are usually 3. In essence you will not be tested on your knowledge of the material but rather on your ability to not make minor mistakes. At higher level math courses the idea of having the entirety of a solution method correct but earning no credit due to algebraic error is utterly inane. I am nearly 3/4 through the semester and fairly confident with the material but will likely fail the course due to his method of grading . In a nutshell, avoid magnan if you wish to be tested on the material taught rather than your ability to double check your work. Oh and to wrap it all up, his lectures and notes do not coincide and you must choose between taking notes or listening to the lecture as doing both guarantees confusion.

Took Dr. Magnan for Calc III. I loved his course. There is lots of HW to do. Does lots of examples in class and gives the theory as well. Well organized and clear lectures. Easygoing style. Very respectful of students. Amazingly does not use notes at the board. Knows his stuff. Tells us concretely how the multivariable calculus is used in scientific applications. Solid prof. Glad I took the course with him.

Took Prof. Magnan for Calc III and ODE. Great style of teaching. He explains things clearly and makes them simple to understand. First he explains the background theory and then he works out various example problems, while commenting on what he is doing so that you understand exactly what is being done and why. He keeps things interesting throughout. You need to stay alert and pay attention, and come to class prepared and keep up with the homework. You can't just wait until the night or weekend before the test to study. The extra credit problems and test retake opportunities were quite helpful for improving my grade to an A-. The Calc III tests were no partial credit (with your work required to be shown), but the ODE tests were partial credit. Prof. Magnan's two courses gave me the foundation and confidence to remain in my Mechanical Engineering major.

Pros: Very clear and detailed explanations.
Very knowledgeable about math, science, and engineering.
Gives very good examples in class that he discusses from beginning to end.
Talks about the applications of the Fourier Series and PDEs.
Very approachable and available for help.
Really cares about the students learning.
Would definitely take again for a math course. I learned a lot in this course that I have used in my engineering classes.

Pros: Very clear explanations. Lots of examples. Fair exams. Down to earth approach. Great attitude. Cheerful. Respectful of students. Very understanding and easygoing.
Cons: None
Gives extra credit problems on exams. Allows us to retake a test to improve our grade. This is my 2nd course with Dr. Magnan. He is a favorite professor of mine. I have learned much from him about math and how to use it.. Wish I could also take PDEs with him.

Pros: - Can sometimes be nice and very helpful
Cons: - Tests are ridiculously hard
- Teaching style is very lacking
He can be a very nice man, but for the most part, the class is not enjoyable. He teaches more for the sake of hearing himself teach, and gives absolutely no partial credit, even though he gives (at the most) 4 part question tests.
