College Football Week 6: Heisman Ballot

By Andrew Musur on October 8, 2015

Week 5 of college football provided another shakeup in the race to the College Football Playoff. Teams like Clemson, TCU and Florida had huge weekends, and made the race for one of those four playoff spots a little more interesting.

Although a ton of teams have played well through the first few weeks of the season, there have been a few exceptional players that have stuck out. Let’s take a look at my Week 6 Heisman Ballot.

This year’s Heisman race seems like a dog fight between three talented running backs: Leonard Fournette from LSU, Nick Chubb from Georgia and Ezekiel Elliott from The Ohio State University.

All three of these guys would love to become the first halfback to win the prestigious award since Mark Ingram did in 2009.

My Top Five

No. 1) Leonard Fournette, Running Back, LSU, Sophomore

Week 5 VS. Eastern Michigan:

2015 Season

The Scoop:

The sophomore halfback put up big numbers once again as he ran for more than 230 yards on 26 carries. The Louisiana native recorded his third straight 200 yard rushing game giving him a whopping 864 yards on the season. The 6-foot-1 tailback has been an absolute monster for the Tigers this season averaging 8.2 yards per carry.

Fournette has been the catalyst of this offense, scoring a crazy 11 touchdowns in just four games. The Tigers and Mr. Fournette have South Carolina next up on their schedule. This could be a trap game as the Gamecocks will have home field advantage, and they may catch the Tigers looking ahead to their tasty October 17 matchup, with #11 Florida.

It’s also worth noting that the sophomore leads the NCAA in rushing yards this season by 63 yards, and has only played four games. The four other guys in the top five all have played five games.

No. 2) Nick Chubb, Running Back, Georgia, Sophomore

Week 5 VS. Alabama:

2015 Season:

The Scoop: Although the Georgia Bulldogs had a rough Saturday in the rain against Alabama, sophomore tailback Nick Chubb impressed as he rattled off 146 yards and one touchdown. Chubb averaged 7.3 yards a carry and provided the Bulldogs with a consistent running threat.

The rain was tough in Athens on Saturday, and that forced both teams to run the ball more. Chubb was a great weapon for the Bulldogs. Nick Chubb and Georgia look to rebound this weekend when they travel to Knoxville to take on the Volunteers of Tennessee.

No. 3) Trevone Boykin, Quarterback, TCU, Senior

Week 5 VS. Texas:

2015 Season:

http://espn.go.com

The Scoop: Our first quarterback on our Heisman watch list checks in at number three, with TCU stud Trevone Boykin. Boykin has been magical this year throwing for more than 1,800 yards and tossing 19 touchdowns compared to only three interceptions.

The Dallas prospect put up big numbers at home against Texas. Boykin tossed five touchdown passes and over 300 yards. It was Boykin’s third straight game with more than 300 yards through the air, four touchdowns or more and more than 40 yards on the ground.

Boykin can do it all, but he did get lucky against Texas Tech. The Horned Frogs are talented, but injuries and suspension may bite them in the behind when this season is coming to a close. I’m rooting for Boykin to keep putting up these unreal numbers. Kansas State is up next for Boykin and TCU.

No. 4) Ezekiel Elliott, Running Back, Ohio State, Junior

Week 5 VS. Indiana:

2015 Season:

http://espn.go.com

The Scoop: Elliott ripped off his fifth straight game with more than 10 carries and more than 100 yards. The 6-foot-1 halfback has been a force to be reckoned with for the Buckeyes. Elliott rumbled for more than 270 yards and three touchdowns against Indiana. Although the Buckeyes have not looked too sharp these past couple of days, they still have a favorable schedule and they have a power back who can pick up yards and score points.

The junior will have another game to pad his stats with Maryland coming to town next Saturday.

No. 5) Jared Goff, Quarterback, California, Junior

Week 5 VS. Washington State:

http://espn.go.com

2015 Season:

http://espn.go.com

The Scoop: Jared Goff is one of my favorite quarterbacks in all of college football. The kid can flat out play ball and is as deadly accurate as they come. Goff has only dipped under 70 percent for completions in one game this season, and has never thrown less than two touchdowns in a game.

The California native is ranked seventh in the NCAA for yards thrown for this season, ranks 8th in completion percentage at 70.2 percent and ranked third in touchdowns thrown with 15. Goff is at the top of a ton of 2016 Draft Boards, and if all goes according to plan my Chicago Bears should have that pick. The Bears should take a long hard look at the 6-foot-4 Cali gunslinger, because he has the skill-set to succeed at the next level.

Cal is ranked #23 in the country, but they face #5 Utah on the road this weekend. I am pretty darn excited to see what Goff can do against a Utah defense that only gave up 20 points to Oregon. And hey if Goff pulls off the upset, I think it might be time to invest in a #16 California jersey … heck maybe even a #16 Bears jersey.
