The Rainy Day Hideaways at Florida State

April showers bring May flowers! But damn, doesn’t it suck when you’ve gotten to campus and you can hear the rain pounding on the roof and windows of your classroom? Especially if you didn’t plan ahead for the rain and forget to bring an umbrella with you. If you’re stuck with having to stay on campus but don’t know what to do, no worries. There’s ton of places on campus that you can hideaway at to save you from the daily showers.

The most obvious and probably largest would be Strozier Library. Sitting at the top of Landis Green and close to the union, multiple dorms, and tons of classroom buildings, Strozier provides a popular rain hideaway during the school day. It is not unusual to see tons of people waiting right past the electronic doors, watching the rain pour down and hoping it’ll lighten up before they have to go to their next class. With five floors (and basement space), there’s plenty of space to spread out and find a spot to pass the time in. Stop by the Starbucks on the first floor and grab a hot drink to warm you up from the cold rain!

If you’re hungry and looking for a bit of a selection while also trying to sit down and wait out the rain, the food court is the place for you! With over four different restaurants to chose from, the food court has a lot of options and tons of seating for you to sit down and enjoy a quick meal while waiting for the rain to let up. The food court plays music consistently so it’s never hard to be entertained while enjoying your food.

While you might know the Student Life Center (commonly referred to as the SLC) as the place where the free movies are played at, it’s more than that! You can go during the day and play video game consoles, use the computers, or pick up some coffee at the Grindhouse. There are couches to lounge on and tables to set up a temporary study paradise. Since it’s not a major study hub, the Student Life Center is a little more slow paced and perfect to hang out when the weather is a little grey. With the large windows facing a courtyard, it’s great to just sit back and read while (trying to) enjoy the rain.

Near the Student Life Center resides the stand alone Starbucks. With indoor and outdoor seating, the Starbucks always boasts a wide array of students who are looking to catch up over a cup of coffee or bring some notes and study before class. However, when the skies turn grey, it becomes a small haven for those walking towards HCB and the Union. If it the sky is drizzling, sitting outside and listening to the rain can be a relaxing hour between classes. Or, if pouring, deciding to cozy up in a corner can be an easy way to get some reading done.

A rather unknown hideaway would be the Krentzman Lounge on the second floor of the student union. Recently remodeled in 2014, the lounge now has multiple multi-media tables that host a television and computer hookups, as well as USB ports and outlets so you can charge your electronics throughout the day. The tables are great for collaboration projects, so if you and your group get stuck with nowhere to go on a rainy day, it is a great place to meet up and complete some group work! There are also couches, and individual seating and desks so even the independently studying student is able to enjoy the lounge and appreciate its facilities.

Another popular hideaway would be Dirac Library. While it is currently under construction (they are redoing the area outside the entrance) it is still open and home to a ton of science literature and texts. Like a few other places on the list, it also has a Starbucks inside where you can dose up on caffeine while waiting for the rain to slow down so you can hustle to your next class. There’s study rooms and independent study desks where you can have a caffeine induced work session since the weather prohibits any outdoor activities anyway.

The weather can really  damper a school day. When it is pouring and you have to go to multiple classes that are all over campus, many people end up just going home or not even making it to school to begin with. But having a key few places that you know you can hide away in during these rainy days can really make a difference when it comes to going to class and remaining productive during the day.
