When it comes to college, cleaning our places usually goes on the back-burner because we have so many other things to do. Most people don’t enjoy living in a place that’s dirty, so seeing that it’s messy and not having time to go into full deep clean mode can add more stress and make it harder to focus on homework.

If this is what usually happens to you, maybe this article will help. Instead of waiting until your place gets to the point of no return and you have to spend three hours cleaning it, why not consider doing these small cleaning things everyday to save you time and energy, and to keep your place looking great all the time?

Bathroom counters

Try and make it a goal for yourself to wipe down the bathroom counters everyday. These can get grimy with water stains, toothpaste, make-up, and hair that has fallen out, so if you wipe it quickly with a Clorox wipe or towel everyday, it will feel cleaner for longer. Of course you’ll still want to deep clean every once in a while, but this will give you more time to do so, and if you have random people drop by, you won’t have to be embarrassed by a messy bathroom.

Ideally, you should wipe the counter quickly after each use, but that’s not realistic for most people, so once a day should suffice.

Clean the things that touch everything

Things like your phone, the TV remote, and your headphones get dirty really fast, and we often don’t really think about all the surfaces they touch or all the fingers that are poking at them.

Think about it, your phone comes in your bed with you, but where was it before? On a desk at school that people have sneezed on? On a counter that had spilled coffee on it? In the bathroom stall with you? The more you think about it, the more grossed out you’ll get, so it might be a good idea to clean these things everyday and make a routine of it. It won’t take long, and will give you peace of mind.

Vacuum/sweep busy areas

Every night, after all the meals have been eaten, and the snacks have been had, it might be a good idea to do a quick sweep under the table to pick up any lingering crumbs. I personally am a messy eater, so this is definitely one that I need to incorporate into my daily routine.

You don’t need to break out the mop every time and shouldn’t spend more than a couple minutes doing it so that it doesn’t become a hassle. You and your roommates can switch off every night so it’s not left to one person, and if you keep in the habit of it, the house will need less overall deep cleaning, giving you more time to focus on more important things, like homework.

De-cluttering in sections

Set aside two to three minutes a day to de-clutter a certain part of your house that’s bothering you. Maybe the magazines are piling up on your coffee table, or your sock drawer is in complete chaos, or your hair ties are littering the living room floor. Whatever it is, if you do it in small incriminates, it seems less daunting and isn’t as hard to put time aside for. Little by little, you’ll get the place all cleaned up and put away, and then it’s the task of keeping it as such, which can be hard as well.

Coffee pot that’s brewing with germs

Coffee pots and teakettles harbor tons of germs on their handles because we touch them at least once a day. To keep yourself healthy and the germs away, make sure to clean the outside of the pots as often as you clean the inside. It might not look dirty, but you’d be surprised how gross they get.

Put away shoes and clothes

Many people have a tendency to rip off their shoes right when they walk in the door, and just drop them wherever. We all think we’ll pick them up later, but if we don’t wear that pair of shoes everyday, they might stay littered in the hallway or in the entrance of our rooms for a bit.

To avoid this, have a designated bin or area where your shoes go, and make sure to take them off and put them there right as you walk in to avoid unnecessary clutter. You’d be surprised at how much of a difference this can make when it comes to the cleanliness feeling of your house.

Same goes for jackets or clothes that you are going to wear again. Instead of throwing them in a pile on the floor or messily over a chair, make an effort to hang everything back up to keep your room looking tidy. Five minutes of this a day saves up to an hour of putting clothes away in the future, so it’s well worth it.

These are just a few things that you can try and encompass into your routine everyday to keep your house looking spotless. If you can’t do it everyday, slowly try and work up to it and see what happens, but don’t be too hard on yourself — you’re doing the best you can.
