Meal Preparation: College Edition

By Carelyn Tiburcio on September 3, 2016

Moving into my apartment has taught me so much about being an adult. Yes, as silly as that sounds, I do feel like renting an apartment has actually allowed me to become a more responsible and mature person. In fact, I think that I do things in a more timely and organized manner. For instance, I clean on a weekly basis, organize my room everyday, and oh, I prepare my meals for the week.

If you haven’t tried meal prepping then I definitely recommend that you start doing it. I cannot explain how simple and timesaving this process is.  It saves you the stress and prevents you from asking yourself “What am I going to eat tonight?”

Now meal prepping doesn’t have to be anything fancy. You’re not making a gourmet meal or anything like that. You’re literally just making meals to sustain yourself.

Okay so lets begin with the basics, like when you should start meal prepping. For me, since it’s the most relaxing day, I usually meal prep on Sundays. It’s also the beginning of the week so it’s a good day to begin your meal plan.

The first thing that I do is make a list of the meals that I’m going to eat throughout the week. I make a list on my phone, since its more convenient and I know that I won’t be forgetting it anywhere.  Some people have magnetic boards and notepads on their fridge and write it all on there. I make sure to jot down meals for everyday of the week. This also gives me time to go to the supermarket if I’m missing anything.

I make sure to have food cut and seasoned before the week starts. I feel as though this takes up the majority of the time before I started meal prepping. On Sundays, I cut meat, wash it, and season it. I then keep them in their own containers for easy access during the week. I also wash and cut any vegetables and fruits that are on my “meal prep” list. I also keep these in containers and plastic bags.

Sometimes I won’t use all my cut vegetables and fruits and that’s perfectly fine. In fact, it’s more than perfect because that means that I could just freeze them and use them for next week. That means that I don’t have to meal prep as much for that week.

It’s not like you have to cook everyday either. If I know that I’m going to be busy on a Tuesday, I make a lot of food on Monday. This allows me to have leftovers and saves me the stress from cooking on Tuesday.

Meal prepping is such a simple and easy process. Taking out at least 45 minutes of your day can save you so much time and energy throughout the week.
