I don’t know about you, but Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays! Probably my favorite if I think long enough of all the amazing things that accompany the holiday.

For one, the most obvious reason is the food. This is America and there is nothing we love as a country more than a great feast. All your favorite dishes served in one evening! Not to mention the glorious food coma followed by the best night’s sleep. Absolute heaven!

All jokes aside, Thanksgiving is the time where you get to reconnect and see all your family again — some that you probably haven’t seen since the last holiday season. There’s nothing better than family time and being with the people that know you the best. Apart from family time and food, though, there are plenty of other activities and fun stuff for you to do during the holiday.

Here are six fun and enjoyable ways you can take advantage of the best holiday ever!

1. Reconnect with friends

The majority of us at school are disconnected from our home life and friends during the course of the semester. We’re stressed about jobs, class, and homework and we tend to be in our own little world. Same goes for our family and friends back at home.

Thanksgiving break is a great time to reconnect with your best friends that you haven’t seen since the end of summer. You’ll have a whole week to do activities that you guys love and it’ll feel like nothing has even changed! Don’t forget mom and dad though! They missed you just as much. It can be annoying to you to stay in the house and to hang out with them but try to put aside at least one day with them!

2. Football

On Thanksgiving Day, there are a slew of games to watch with your family after the big meal. Cause nothing says America more than food and football. Here is a list of some games that will be broadcasted.

Vikings @ Lions: 12:30 p.m., CBS

Redskins @ Cowboys: 4:30 p.m., FOX

Steelers @ Colts 8:30 p.m., CBS

Don’t forget to catch our home game against the Florida Gators on Saturday, November 26!

3. Parade & Dog show

If you’re not really a football person, the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade live from New York City and the Dog show may be more suited for you! As you may know, every year since 1924 in the heart of NYC brands, companies, and organizations create huge floats and performances on Thanksgiving Day. Organizations like the American Army marching band and the famous Rockettes participate.

Everyone loves a parade and it’s great for the entire family to watch and enjoy. Immediately following the parade, The National Dog show will air! The Dog show has been a tradition for 137 years. During the show various breeds perform certain agility test and undergo assessments. In the end, a favorite dog is chosen by judges as dog of the year by the American Kennel Club.

4. Check out a movie!

Almost every year there is a groundbreaking film that is released around the famous holiday. This year is no different with two movies that are sure to be blockbusters. The first is “Moana” out Nov. 23, which is the latest Disney installment that features a young Hawaiian girl who has a strong connection with the ocean and has a talent in navigating the sea. She embarks on a journey with Demi-God Maui. The two of them go on an amazing voyage together.

The second movie that comes out on Nov. 23is “Allied” featuring Brad Pitt. The movie is set in the era of World War II, where an American intelligence officer and a fighter in the French Resistance fights a great enemy and completes a deadly mission.

5. Relax

One thing that can be guaranteed (or should be guaranteed rather) during the Thanksgiving break is relaxation and rest. There are only a few days out of the year that we get to have a break and experience that much needed time off.

We’re lucky that as college students we get weeks at a time during the holidays. In the real world, we’ll be fortunate to have a few days off from our jobs. I’m soaking up the freedom I have now and so should you! During this time, you should also try to regroup and find yourself again. Take a spa day, go to the beach, or just simply stay at home! Do anything that allows you to unwind and enjoy yourself.

6. Black Friday

You can’t think about Thanksgiving without Black Friday shopping coming to mind! Black Friday is a day that you wake up super early to go buy your favorite products in preparation for Christmas. You might be looking for a Christmas gift for yourself or the family and this is the perfect day to do that.

With great deals for more than half the original price off, the long lines and chaos are definitely worth it. Some companies even start Black Friday openings on Thanksgiving evening. I personally don’t agree with shopping when you’re supposed to be with your family and friends but to each their own. Regardless it is a fun time and will get you in the Christmas giving spirit.

Whatever you plan on doing this year, take advantage of every moment and make the best of it!
