RhinoBird: Revolutionizing the Way We Experience Video

By Francine Fluetsch on March 13, 2017

What’s one of the first things you do when you wake up and one of the last things you do before you go to sleep? I’m going to take a guess and say that you are watching videos of some sort: be it on your phone, on your computer, your IPad (you get the idea). Videos are a big part of our world today, and everyone is always trying to keep up with the latest memes, sporting events, celebrity fails, what’s happening in politics, etc.

The problem is, it can sometimes be hard to get a good quality video to play, let alone find the exact moment that you are looking for — like if you wanted to see the Oscar fluke because you didn’t watch the award show — and filtering through a bunch of bad videos is such a waste of time. But people, the future of video watching is here.

According to this press release, “Rhinobird, a Cambridge-based company, is transforming how we experience events by watching videos and live-streams. They created what they have called ‘MAV,’ or multi-angle video.”

So how does this work exactly? Well, it’s basically a video player that has the capability of playing multiple videos or live streams at the same time, giving you, the viewer, the choice as to which video that you want to switch to, which audio source you want to use/switch between, and there is no latency.

Now, you might be thinking that this could get a little chaotic, but the app has it handled.

“Using a combination of techniques that include meta data analysis and machine learning, Rhinobird has found a unique way to discover and synchronize videos that have been posted directly to its platform or published on YouTube or Facebook — allowing viewers to play all the videos of the same event, live or not live, perfectly timed and within a single player box — without additional search or time-consuming editing.”

This is sounding pretty cool!

You as the viewer have the opportunity to submit your own video content into the MAV, to display your unique angle and become part of the overall experience. This can be used at your favorite sports games, music festivals, concerts, fashion shows, etc. The possibilities are endless, just like the video content. Now, having thousands of cameras recording the same thing will allow the viewer to get the most cohesive viewing experience ever without having to click aimlessly through a bunch of mediocre videos that are recorded in crappy quality.

And get this, even the name of the company has an awesome reason for being; it was inspired by the symbolic relationship between two very different, yet mutually dependent species, the rhino and the oxpecker bird.

Starting this week, the app will be available for iOS users (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rhinobird-multi-angle-video-streaming-lipsync/id1049432684?mt=8), and on the Web at www.Rhinobird.tv. A native Android version of the app is coming soon.

Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments below. Happy watching!
