The Benefits of Group Tutoring

By Alexis Angelini on March 20, 2017

FINAL

College classes can be hard and additional help can make them easier. Students can be hesitant to go to tutoring sessions as an additional resource but I am here to advocate for group tutoring sessions and what a great resource they can be for collegiates.

1. Teamwork

Although we can be hesitant to work in groups because we’ve all been burned by that one person who didn’t do their fair share of work or forgot their piece of the project, it is an effective way to share ideas and concepts. When working with others it’s easy to explain problems and methods from a different perspective than a professor or even the lead tutor may have.

Another member of a group tutoring session may have a different approach or strategy, a great way to get the creative juices flowing.

2. Preparation for the real world

In typical office and work environments working in a team and interacting with others is part of the day-to-day work duties. Working together as a team to solve problems in smaller settings like a group tutoring session will only better prepare you for the workplace and your future.

It is important to be able to easily cooperate and work with others especially for a job. This will allow you to try out that aspect of teamwork and working with others before you are thrown into the real world.

3. Increased independence

It may seem like the opposite of what you would expect to happen from working in a group but group settings can create better leaders. After working with your team you may be more comfortable voicing and expressing your opinion. After a student becomes more vocal and willing to share ideas, this habit will continue to show up in other activities and spaces they are a part of. Once they develop skills such as these clear leadership skills, the leadership aspects will transpire into the rest of their day-to-day scenes.

4. A social scene

Okay, it may not be exactly the same as most social scenes in college but it can still be just as enjoyable. Group tutoring will introduce you to a whole new group of people even if it is in a more academic setting. These people will become a great group of students to rely on when you are having questions outside of your group tutoring session.

You still receive the same benefits as a typical tutoring session, a better grasp on information, a designated study spot and time, a different viewpoint than your professor, and additional help outside the classroom, but with more people. Also, a group allows you to meet others also in the same situations as you (which leads us to our next topic). This, of course, is opposed to a typical tutoring session where it is just a tutor and student in a setting.

5. A support system

It is no longer just you and another person trying to figure out the problem while they explain it to you but you and a bunch of people feeling exactly how you are. They are also having a hard time with the material. They also need a little bit more time reviewing a certain type of problem. They are also having issues with the way their professor is explaining things in class. They also want to review for the exam.

Tutoring in a group will provide a support system of students in the same or in a very similar situation to you. It will feel nice knowing that you are not the only one having these issues and others are exactly where you are. Who knows, maybe you and a group member will be in the same class or maybe you’ll even become friends?

6. More dimensional than regular tutoring

Yes, one-on-one tutoring is still beneficial and a way to improve your skills in a particular subject. With group tutoring, you receive all of the aforementioned benefits such as different perspectives, a social scene, real-world preparation, and more. Instead of the dull student and tutor dynamic, a multivariable dynamic is in effect. It is no longer the same rapport over and over but a new, changing, and spontaneous dynamic (as spontaneous as tutoring can be) rapport. There are clearly benefits to attending a group tutoring session.

I hope I’ve convinced students everywhere to try to attempt to find a group tutoring session near you. Typically, they are available for all subjects and courses at a variety of times. Let me know in the comments if you have taken my advice and any thoughts you have on group tutoring sessions! Good luck with the rest of the semester, collegiates!

As the semester winds down try a group tutoring session. As written above it can be extremely  beneficial for collegiate students. Good luck with final exam!
