Why Having A Degree Is Important

By Charlene Vereen on June 18, 2017

Growing up, most people are usually told to go to school and get a degree, you can either  listen, or, you can take the route you feel is better. Often times people are told this because it’s one of the main ways to make a living; for most. Now, I understand that school is not for everyone but there are other ways to get degrees as well, for example, technical schools. Earning a college degree is such an important step in life that it has become a central part of the “American Dream”. The idea is to go to college, get a job, buy a house, raise a family. It may not always be that simple, but it all starts with your college education.

Earning a college degree is all about opening up opportunities in life. It prepares you, both intellectually and socially, for your career and your adult life. The benefits of a college education include career opportunities like better paying and higher skilled jobs, but studies have shown that it also leads to overall happiness and stability. Unlike some people, others without a college degree tend to live a more struggled filled life. In this case, not all, but some, have to rely on government assistance in order to make ends meet; and to be honest, who wants to live a life like that?

For most people, the ability to earn more money is the driving force behind going to college. A post-secondary degree, whether it is a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD, is the most common route to careers that demand higher skills and offer higher pay. In my opinion, I don’t believe it’s possible to live off of a high school diploma, but even if you accomplish an AA, any degree is better than no degree. Moreover, studies show that college graduates earn significantly more money throughout their lifetime than those with only high school education.

Another reason why having a degree is important is that they provide better career opportunities. Earning a college degree is the most common pathway to a better career. Entering college, not everyone knows what they want to do when they grow up. But most know they want to have a better job; not only one that will pay more, but one in which they are more satisfied and secure. Often times it’s not necessarily what you study, but the fact that you studied something at all.

Aside from training you in an expert field, college trains you to think analytically, understand complex subjects and communicate your own critical ideas about them. It also instills crucial skills like organization, self-discipline and the ability to complete tasks from start to finish. In other words, college helps mold you into a more professional individual. It gives you a sense of who you are or can be, most importantly it allows you to use your potential to the best of your ability.

Earning a degree  also allows you to make great connections. College offers a huge number of opportunities to network and connect with other members of your field. It’s a great place to meet people, regardless. With all the activities, clubs, organizations, and services provided on college campuses, meeting people in college is typically a lot easier than meeting people elsewhere, in my opinion. Making social and professional connections can be great because in many fields, who you know is just as important as what you know, and college is the perfect arena to improve in both areas.

There are many different self skills you can learn while earning a degree. To those who may think that it’s just a piece of paper, it isn’t, only because you learn so many things about yourself along the way. You learn to discipline yourself and for that you become more responsible. As an individual you will posses the strategies of thinking differently than others, as well communicating and writing effectively. Additionally, college students learn not only facts and information, but also choice-making strategies. For this they are highly valuable in every area of  life, from business strategies to investment options and more.

An education can help you transform yourself and the world around you. When you have new knowledge, you want to share it with friends and family. More information being shared with a majority of the population generally improves society and makes individuals conscious of the effect each person has on the world. Consider earning a degree as a major life goal. Accomplishing it will bring you tremendous personal satisfaction. So, if you are still asking yourself why should you earn a degree, it is important to remember the significant amount of opportunity available for college graduates. The global economy is becoming increasingly more competitive, and in order to give yourself the best chance for a well-paying job, you must first understand the importance of college education.

To start, I've always shared a passion for writing. I find it interesting to be able to tackle and discuss certain issues as an individual. I love the idea of being able to express myself or even giving someone else a change of thought.
