5 Things to Check Out in Tallahassee

By Jaime Garcia Montes on August 2, 2017

Just like in any other place in the world, things in Tallahassee can get a bit repetitive and boring after a while. For most students at Florida State University, this is the case after being here for four years of your life.

Of course, Tallahassee has some great bars and clubs for college students, but after a while, the nightlife loses its sense of excitement and becomes more of a thing you have to do because well, that’s what everyone else seems to want to do.

This repetitive cycle of things to do in and around FSU’s campus can make your college semester seem much longer than it actually is. The best thing to do is try out new places, switch up the norm and try something else around town. Here are five things that you should check out during your time at Florida State University.

Wakulla Springs

Address: 465 Wakulla Park Drive, Wakulla Springs, FL 32327

Wakulla Springs is the world’s largest and deepest freshwater spring, and it happens to be just south of Tallahassee. Aside from the plentiful marine wildlife the park has to offer, there is also river boat tours and best of all: a dive tower.

The dive tower is the main attraction for FSU students. The tower stands two stories tall which makes it an exhilarating jump from the top. Aside from being an entertaining attraction, the dive tower also provides a beautiful view of the springs. Aside from the tower, there are also docks floating in the water and a beach to relax on. The one downside to Wakulla Springs is that because it is a natural spring, the water is very cold at just about 69 degrees all year round.

Crenshaw Lanes

Address: 104 Crenshaw Building, Oglesby Union, 75 North Woodward Ave.

Crenshaw Lanes is a bowling alley right by the Student Union on FSU’s campus. The bowling alley has 12 lanes and eight billiards tables as well. They’re open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, making it a solid option as opposed to going to the same clubs over and over again.

What makes Crenshaw Lanes so great for FSU students are the deals they offer. Every day of the week, a different deal is offered exclusively to FSU students, including $1 bowling on Wednesdays, buy one get one free on Thursdays, and select prizes on Fridays and Saturdays. Standard bowling and billiards fees are also half priced for students.

Sky Zone Trampoline Park

Address: 1925 N Monroe St #109, Tallahassee, FL 32303

This place is awesome. Sky Zone is a great place to be active, as it has jump parks, ‘Sky slam’ trampoline basketball, ultimate dodgeball, and a foam pit. With standard options of 30 minutes, one hour, or two hours, you’ll probably find yourself out of breath after your first 10 minutes, but unwilling to leave.

If you really enjoy your time there, consider signing up for their ultimate dodgeball or ultimate volleyball programs!

FSU Intramural Sports

These university-organized sports help you not only stay active but also introduce you to tons of other students also enrolled in FSU. Each semester offers unique sports options and there is no limit to how many you join! Browse the 20+ options, one of which is dodgeball at Tallahassee’s local Sky Zone Trampoline Park, and give one or more of them a shot.

You get to select your own teammates and choose what days and times your team plays. There are several different divisions in order to balance out the skill differences among the athletes. You can also choose from co-ed leagues that allow for males and females to compete together. The best part about FSU’s intramural sports program is that joining them is 100 percent free for FSU students, so hey, might as well try them out!

Fun Station

Address: 2821 Sharer Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32312

Fun Station is a very popular attraction for FSU students. With options like laser tag, go-karts, and mini golf, you can spend the entire day there and never run out of something to do. This place offers a ton of entertainment without having to break the bank. Each day, Fun Station offers specials on their attractions, such as half-priced arcade games on Tuesdays and ‘College Night’ on Wednesdays, which offers $3 activities to college students.

There’s nothing wrong with doing something repetitively as long as you don’t mind it; if it works for you then there’s no need to change it. However, for those of you that are looking for something new to experience in Tallahassee, I strongly recommend you give these places a shot, as they each offer something extremely unique from one another.

If you have family coming to visit, rather than taking them clubbing, maybe take them to a more family-friendly environment, somewhere like one of these five places.
