4 Inspiring Quotes to Fuel Your Wanderlust

By Tamiera Vandegrift on August 10, 2017

One of the greatest privileges we have is the ability to travel the world. There is no greater time to take advantage of this privilege than while you are a student. Universities and other programs offer study abroad terms where you can take classes toward your degree in another country!

There are also foreign exchange programs that allow you to essentially switch places with a foreign student for a short time, whether it be a few weeks, a few months, or even an entire academic year. The value of traveling experience is immeasurable.

However, it is possible and common to be discouraged when it comes to traveling.

After all, airplane tickets can cost a ton of your hard earned money. Not to mention, traveling to somewhere you have never been before can be beyond intimidating. Does this mean that you should throw in the towel and give up on the chance to broaden your horizons? Heck no!

Even though traveling is an expensive and intimidating pursuit, it is beyond worth the price of admission and the risk of adventure. Don’t believe me? Perhaps some words of wisdom can change your mind. Keep reading to learn everything you have to gain from travel from those who understand the value of adventure.

“A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” — Tim Cahill

Do you remember how you met your best friend? It’s probably ingrained in your mind by now, but do you remember what life was like before you met them. It was probably a little duller, wasn’t it? In a sense, life is measured by a series of moments and experiences, while the people we encounter during those moments and experiences make everything worthwhile.

The thought of travel can be such a scary and abstract concept that it’s hard to fathom what incredible things are on the other side. Don’t think of your travels as miles on an airplane. Instead, consider them to be steps towards new relationships and unique conversations. Every friendly face you meet during your journey is another step towards understanding a lifestyle and the world that you otherwise would have never discovered.

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” – Anonymous

This saying is about as corny as it gets. We’ve seen it in almost every travel movie or novel ever made and it’s absolutely done to death. So why is it in this list? While this quote is as cliché as cliché can be, it’s also absolutely 100 percent true. Without a doubt, traveling is one of the best ways to clear your mind of any negative vibes and to remind yourself of what’s good in the world.

At the same time, traveling is the only way to get to know something other than yourself and other than what you’re comfortable with. By all means, travel to another country that speaks a language you don’t understand. Try foods in restaurants with ingredients you can’t pronounce. Taste and savor every inch of this life that you can while you can. Travel in order to make every second of your life worthwhile.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”

Without a doubt, plane tickets are expensive. Costs of study abroad and foreign exchange programs are staggering without a doubt, especially when you’re a college student who has been eating Kraft Mac and Cheese and Ramen for the past month. We’ve all been there. However, college will fly by fast, faster than you can probably imagine. Once you’re settled in a career and perhaps working towards building your own family, you will almost definitely look back and wish you had the freedom to see the world.

Story time. I was in a rough spot financially when my friends approached me with the idea of flying to Maine and camping on an island for a few days. At first, I was totally against it. The costs of the cabin, the flight, and the rental car would all be too overwhelming for me. Then it hit me. Maine was one of my dream destinations. I always wanted to see the sun rise before the rest of our country did. I always wanted to stroll through the small towns and see the wildlife. So did I book that ticket? You bet I did.

Our goal in life should be to get through with as few regrets as possible. We only have this one chance, so why waste it by playing safe?

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” – Saint Augustine

As a college student, our routine is pretty much carved out for us. Wake up, brush our teeth, get dressed, go to class, go do homework and studying, go home, and go to bed. Rinse and repeat. The worst thing we can do is get stuck in so much of a routine that we forget that there is a world outside our dorm room.

Tl;dr: Please. For the love of everything, book your ticket. Reserve your hotel. See the world. You won’t regret it.
