Resolution Ideas That Will Make 2018 Your Best Year Yet

By Vivian El-Salawy on December 27, 2017

The beginning of a new year is a great time to start fresh and put behind all of the negativity of the year prior. While most people look forward to the New Year in pursuit of weight loss goals, New Year’s resolutions do not have to circulate around your fitness alone. Here are a variety of New Year’s resolution ideas that will make 2018 your best year yet:

Academics

If learning is of importance to you, reflect on this past year’s academics. What could you have done better? Where were your greatest challenges, and why were they challenges to you? What could you do to potentially overcome these challenges in the future?

In 2018, consider taking your studies more seriously. If you take your studies too seriously, consider making more time for extracurricular activities. Make an effort to learn something new every day, such as learning a new language or skill. Make sure that you check your facts and make informed statements. Take a course that isn’t required (that is, if you can afford to), just to explore an area of interest. Who knows, it could change your future.

Relationships

Reflect on your personal relationships with people in your life: your classmates, coworkers, family, friends, roommates, and significant others. What are some ways that you may have neglected people within this past year, whether it was not being there for them enough, or simply not putting in much effort into maintaining strong relationships with them. Were there any conflicts that placed a heavy weight on your chest this year? Is there a possible resolution? Are you approachable? Could you be more approachable?

This upcoming year, you can give your family some extra calls – maybe schedule a weekly FaceTime session. You can make a greater effort to remember people’s birthdays, or smile at strangers on the street. If there are problems or conflicts between you and another important individual in your life, try to compromise with them. Find the root of the issue, and mutually create a solution. If there are people in your life that are toxic, or might be dragging you down, evaluate the importance of their presence in your life.

Health

Many New Year’s resolutions circulate around fitness goals, and that is great. However, you can give that a twist and make small steps that will make a huge impact on your life. Consider cutting out caffeine and consume less coffee and soda for a healthier lifestyle. Cut back on sugar consumption. Make healthier choices in general: eat more vegetables, limit carb and sugar intake, limit fried foods and so on. Consider eating at home and cooking your own meals and cut back eating out at restaurants to only once or twice a week. If you don’t work out, consider getting a gym membership and make it a goal to go at least a few times within a week. If you already work out, up your fitness and try to improve your mile time or do more stretching. Even drinking more water every day will go miles in improving your health.

Finance

College students are constantly in a financial struggle, but this is another category where a little can go a long way. Reflect on your current financial standing. If you have been having trouble paying your credit card bills or rent on time, make a better effort to pay everything on time. If you haven’t already, build a budget, reflect on that budget, and consider making some cuts. Are you eating out too much? Is your extra money going toward entertainment or evening outings? Where can you make some positive adjustments? You can also make greater money-saving efforts: start a piggy bank, use more coupons, and download applications for your phone or computer that will help you save more money. You can check out Honey as a plug-in on Google Chrome, which automatically pulls of coupon or promo codes for online purchases. Ibotta gives you rebates on groceries. These are just a few of the available resources.

Self

Self-care is one of the most important things that you can do for yourself, and others. Treating yourself better, internally and externally, will have a huge impact on both the quality of your own life, and as a result, the quality of the lives of those around you.

Physically, take care of your own skin better. Use lotion, pay attention to what you are consuming (whether you want to change that or not is up to you, but being aware is important). Make an effort to feel more comfortable in your skin. This doesn’t necessarily mean changing what it looks like. Reflect on what you feel good about in yourself.

Internally, discover yourself. Figure yourself out and don’t involve yourself in any toxic cultures. Be open to constructive criticism, but don’t let what other people say to you drag you down. Work on your self-esteem. Make the most out of every day, even if it is jotting down the moments that you are most grateful for every day.

These are some of the many things you have to look forward to next year. As you reflect on 2017, be sure to remember the good moments and carry them on into the new year. Replace negativity in your past with positivity in your future. Last but not least, if you don’t actively pursue your New Year’s resolution starting January 1st, it’s not too late to start it down the line, whether it’s in early spring, mid-summer, or late fall. Make the most out of every moment.
