6 Great Places to Study Beyond Your Desk at Home

By Victoria Robertson on December 4, 2018

Nobody likes to study. It’s easily one of the most frustrating aspects of college, and requires a large amount of time, energy and concentration, all rather difficult to achieve when there are distractions all around you.

So how can you ensure you stay focused as you study? And where are the best places to study on campus aside from your desk at home?

To help you attain the best of study locations for you, here are six great places to study beyond your desk at home.

1. The Campus Library

When it comes to studying, the first place everyone will turn is the campus library. Designed specifically to be a quiet place to study with any and all resources you could possibly need, the library is a fantastic place to start when it comes to your studying.

That being said, keep in mind that the library tends to get much busier during peak testing times (such as midterms and finals) and that it’s not always an option due to crowds. Also, you may need to plan in advance to get there earlier if you want to secure a spot, as people that go to the library tend to stay for a while, so finding a spot during a peak time can be challenging.

2. A Classroom

Another great location for some isolated studying is in an empty classroom. There are plenty of open rooms throughout college campuses, and these can be great locations to take advantage of, as you’ll have your own space to focus on your work.

The downside to this option is that classroom availability can change if you don’t stick to a specific schedule, as a room that’s open one hour likely will not be the next hour. So this is a great option if you have a schedule in mind, but if you need flexibility, you may want to seek an alternative option.

3. The Quad

Central to most campuses, the quad is a great place to get some studying done, as there is nearly always room for you to relax and spread out. That being said, the quad is a very busy area, so the number of distractions can be high as well.

In addition, quad usage is seasonal, as you likely aren’t going to sit outside to study in the middle of winter (depending on where you live). So while this is a great option for some of you, it’s likely not going to work for everyone.

4. The Local Library

When the campus library isn’t an option due to high crowds, keep in mind there is usually a local library close enough to be a viable option. While you may need to get off campus transportation, these libraries are typically much less crowded and quiet, making them the ideal place to study.

Also, keep in mind these libraries may have events and other instances in which they aren’t as quiet as they would normally be, so be sure to check the schedule as well so you aren’t caught off guard by any distractions.

5. A Bookstore

No, you don’t have to buy something to take a seat and get some work done. Bookstores are notoriously quiet, making them an ideal location for your studying. Simply grab yourself a coffee, pull up a chair and get to work!

Again, this may require off-campus transportation, but it’s worth it if you’re able to get some extra studying done in a quiet location. Plus, you can pick up another book for some post-studying reading!

6. A Coffee Shop

Last, but certainly not least, there is always the option of visiting a local (or campus) coffee shop to get some work done. Professionals in the working world do it all the time, and it works just as well for studying.

Again, there are going to be distractions here, as the shop doesn’t have to be quiet and there will be people coming in and out constantly, but the distractions are so numerous that you won’t even notice most of them. If you’re one of those individuals that has the ability to tune out the world around them as they study, this is the ideal study location for you.

While staying in and studying at home is always a viable option, if you need to really concentrate on a lesson or simply find that there are too many distractions when you attempt to study at home, there are plenty of other locations that may be a better fit for you.

While no one enjoys studying, and it can be a bit of a pain to venture out for the perfect study location, once you find it, you’ll learn that it’s rather easy to concentrate so long as you are in the correct environment.

So use these six locations as a starting point, but don’t be afraid to look around for other locations as well, as you’re sure to find something that’s a fit for you!
