Activities You Can Do While Staying at Home

By Alexis Sanchez on March 27, 2020

So, there have been a lot of changes recently with there being Spring Break and the spread of COVID-19 (the coronavirus). My graduate program has incorporated remote learning, online meetings, and working from home which I know is the new reality for a lot of people. In order to help myself and others around me, I have been quarantined since the announcement/recommendation to do so and it’s been tough. As a school psychology graduate student, literally half of my week involved working with and helping schools so not being able to do that has been jolting. However, there have been some things that have helped me feel more like I’m still following my goals and connecting with others in meaningful ways. Here are some activities you can do while staying at home!

1. Write your loved one’s letters

I know I’ve let my busy schedule prior to this keep me from talking and writing to the people in my life that I don’t get to talk to or speak to as much. I’ve found writing letters to my close friends to be a great way to really talk about things that might be more difficult to discuss over the phone. This also gives me a time to put away my phone and all other technology, be able to disconnect, and write directly to the people I care about. Writing things down can be therapeutic because you can tell your loved ones about your day and about what new things you have tried! You could write them a whole story for fun and ask them to continue it. So many possibilities and yet you get to connect with people you care about right at home.

2. Incorporate fun brain breaks throughout your day

I feel like brain breaks are essential to be able to feel like you’re actually able to focus at home. The great thing about brain breaks is that there are so many different kinds of them! You can find a new dance to learn on YouTube or TikTok. You can get one of those color-by-number drawings or color in books and have a wonderful picture or painting for yourself in your home. You can do karaoke with your favorite songs in their instrumental versions on YouTube. Make sure to give yourself a break to really relax your brain and your body. You deserve it.

3. Do that hobby you really love

The hobby I really love is creative writing, so I have been writing for fun during my breaks and when I start to feel really stressed at home. It’s allowed me to get back into a hobby and passion of mine during a particularly difficult and stressful time. So, whatever your hobby is, try to find ways to adapt it for when you’re at home! You’ll feel better doing something you enjoy and you’ll feel better doing something for you. This lets you focus on your mental health, which should always be a priority but especially important right now. Consider listening/watching one of my favorite relaxing and inspiring videos on YouTube displaying the world’s 2nd largest aquarium with the song “Please Don’t Go” by Barcelona.
